Adventures
and Reminiscences of a Volunteer Or A Drummer Boy From Maine
by George T. Ulmer Company H, 8th Maine Volunteer Infantry. Published
1892 in wraps, 77 pages, 13 illustrations. Cover slightly stained
with two small chips on back cover about the size of a half dime.
"When Fort
Sumpter was bombarded I was a midget of a boy, a barefooted ragged
newsboy in the city of New York.... I felt that I could have conquered
the rebellious faction alone, so confident was I of my fighting ability,"
wrote George Ulmer of his adventure of joining the army. At 14 and
small for his age George worked hard to be accepted as a soldier.
Proud of his youthful days in the army George published this history
of his war years. A colorful history of a 14-year-old soldier. For
information on his eventful military career see Too
Young To Die.
